YOUR FACTS. A CLEARER APPLICATION.

Translate military experience into a civilian résumé

A civilian hiring manager may not recognize a military billet or acronym. Explain the work in language the employer understands, while keeping your official service history and responsibilities accurate. Translation is about clarity, not upgrading your authority.

1. Choose one target role

A résumé for logistics coordination needs different examples from one for training or customer support. Read the target duties first. Identify the actions and tools you already know, then choose relevant service examples. Do not add commercial software or industry experience merely because it appears in the posting.

2. Keep the official role accurate

Retain your real service branch, title and dates. You may add a plain-language explanation alongside a title when it accurately describes the work. Do not replace your official title with an invented civilian title or describe military service as federal civilian employment.

3. Explain the task and your part

Ask: what did I organize, inspect, maintain, document or teach? Who used my work? Which equipment or procedures did I actually use? Distinguish performing, assisting, supervising and commanding. If an outcome was a team result, describe your contribution rather than claiming it all.

4. Use numbers you can support

Personnel counts, inventory quantities and training sessions can provide useful scope when they are accurate and appropriate to disclose. A strong bullet does not need a percentage. Leave unsupported savings, readiness increases and performance claims out.

5. Keep sensitive details out

Use only information appropriate for a public job application. Do not paste classified, operationally sensitive or unnecessary personal information into a résumé tool. For credentials and clearances, include only accurate information that is appropriate and relevant to the vacancy. Never imply a license transfers automatically.

6. Check the hiring path separately

Veterans’ preference and hiring authorities are separate from résumé writing. Eligibility depends on your circumstances and the vacancy. Read the announcement and official agency instructions; a résumé tool cannot determine eligibility or guarantee referral.

7. Sort out VA benefits too

A job change is a good time to check your VA disability rating, GI Bill, and other benefits you earned. Veteran Benefits Assistance offers free tools to see what you may qualify for and help organizing the evidence for a VA claim.
