YOUR FACTS. A CLEARER APPLICATION.

How to shorten a federal résumé to two pages

A shorter résumé should make your relevant experience easier to assess. It should not hide required employment details or turn supporting work into leadership. Start with the actual announcement, then decide which verified examples deserve the space.

1. Start with the vacancy, not the font size

Read Qualifications, Specialized Experience, How You Will Be Evaluated and Required Documents. Write down the work the agency needs evidence of. Match each requirement to something you actually did. An employer cannot assess an experience you have not described, but repeating a requirement does not prove that you meet it.

2. Make a relevance map

For each important duty, list the task you performed, the tool or process you used, and your own contribution. Keep an outcome only when you can substantiate it. If you supported a coordinator, say supported or assisted. Do not convert the announcement’s desired qualifications into your qualifications.

3. Keep the employment facts visible

For relevant employment, keep employer, job title, month/year dates and hours per week. Include your actual federal series and grade for federal positions. Your target grade is not your previously held grade. Include current contact information and the education or credentials relevant to the announcement. Follow its specific instructions.

4. Cut repetition before cutting meaning

Replace repeated descriptions with distinct evidence. Group related actions when doing so remains readable. Reduce generic objectives, long lists of personality traits and unrelated detail. Prioritize the examples that demonstrate the required level of work. A two-page maximum is not a requirement to fill two pages.

5. Check the exported file

Review the final PDF page by page. Keep headings with their text, use readable type, and check dates, hours and contact details. Reopen the Word file if you intend to edit it. Editing can change pagination, so inspect the final version you actually submit. The announcement controls required documents and any applicable exception.
